A rare bottle of Scotch became the world’s most expensive whisky when it was sold for a record price of £848,750 at auction in Edinburgh, reported The Telegraph (UK).
The 60-year-old bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami - distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986 - has been described as the “Holy grail of whisky”.
It set a new world record at the Bonhams’ whisky sale in, fetching £700,000 plus a £148,750 sales premium and is understood to have been bought by a telephone bidder in the Far East.
The seller, a UK-based "whisky connoisseur", was in a taxi in Italy when the hammer came down and was said to be "thrilled".
In May this year another bottle of the renowned dram was sold by the auction house in Hong Kong for £814,000 - the previous record for a bottle of Scotch.
Experts said its value was based on a combination of its rarity, its vintage and its unique artwork.
In 1986, Macallan commissioned the pop artists Valerio Adami and Sir Peter Blake - who co-created the cover of the Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band - to design the labels for a limited edition. Only 12 bottles were produced for each design.
They were used as corporate gifts for the Speyside distillery’s most valued customers and it is not known how many still exist.
One is said to have been destroyed in an earthquake in Japan in 2011 and one is thought to have been opened and drunk.
Richard Harvey, an international director at Bonhams, said: "It is fitting that the new record for this iconic Scottish product should be set here in Scotland.
"This bottle was part of a wonderful collection that belonged to a real whisky connoisseur and enthusiast, and he is thrilled.
"He is attending one of children's wedding in Italy and was travelling in a car from an airport when the lot came up. He wasn't able to follow what was going on online, but he was thrilled. We are very pleased for him."
The whisky was expected to fetch between £700,000 and £900,000.
The bottle sold in Edinburgh was bought from the distillery for an undisclosed sum in 1994, and is held in a specially commissioned cabinet based on the traditional “brass and glass” distillery spirit safe.
