Australia Arrests Teens Over IS Terror Plot

Video Preview

Five teenagers have been arrested in Australia over what police have described as an Islamic State-inspired terror plot.

According to police, the teens were planning a major attack in Australia's second largest city Melbourne to mark the centenary next week of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli during World War I.

"This particular matter was ISIS inspired," a senior police spokesman told a news conference.

In an earlier statement, Victoria state police said plot included plans for "targeting police officers".

All five men were arrested in an early morning operation carried out by Victorian state police and the Australian Federal Police in the suburbs of the city.

Two, both aged 18, are being held in relation to alleged terrorism-related offences, police said.

A third, also aged 18, was arrested for alleged weapons offences, while the final two, aged 18 and 19 are in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

The arrests come some two months after two men were charged in connection with an "imminent" terror attack in Sydney.

Police seized an Islamic State flag, a machete and an Arabic video allegedly disclosing the plot.

The self-styled cleric, Man Haron Monis, who took 18 people hostage at a cafe in Sydney in December, also claimed to have been linked to IS.

Earlier this year Prime Minister Tony Abbott warned that the threat from "home-grown extremists" was worsening.

At least 110 Australian nationals are believed to have travelled to Iraq and Syria to join IS.

More than 30 have since returned to the country.
