Supermarket plans to sell vegetables grown on its own rooftop

Video Preview

A Belgian supermarket has plans to sell the cultivated crops which are as local it is. The Delhaize supermarket chain, significantly in Boondael branch plans to begin selling of agricultural produce which is grown in their own rooftop garden and greenhouse, reported International Supermarket News.

It is expected to roll out by the starting of the summer in 2017. Exclusively around 3,444 square feet or 320 sq. meters will be available for cultivation. Half of the portion will be made available to cultivate in open air and another half will be devoted for green house. When the weather is not fair enough for cultivation in open air space, the retailer can continue its cultivation in the poly greenhouse. The ultimate agricultural produce which grows on the retailer’s rooftop will be clearly sold at a much cheaper price than the organic vegetables they offer.

Theoretically the produce which is grown on their roof top can be explained as organic but technically it cannot be described as organic because it is not cultivated traditionally in the natural soil. Delhaize expects better participation of schools and other educational institutions as well as the fellow community to come into action through visits and participation.

The Minister for the Environment of Brussels, Mr Celine Fremault told that developing quality and organic vegetable produce, based upon very short cycles, is one of the real challenges of the Brussels region. If everyone follows the idea which Delhaize as shown, they can attain a target of 30 per cent of vegetable and fruit production through technical cultivation before 2035, as is planned currently. If the project is executed as planned, Delhaize supermarket will be the first of its kind in Belgium to grow and sell their own products. The pilot project will definitely help Delhaize to evaluate about the idea and how it works. Yet they don’t know how much product and in what volume they can cultivate in its rooftop and the same can be implemented in other stores.
